Mapping Your Digital Space

The Resident Category

Creating my Digital Space map was exciting because I realized I have a lot of apps in my phone. I also realized how I am mostly a visitor in all of them. The few apps I am actually a resident are

    •  TikTok
    • Snapchat
    • Instagram
    • Twitter
The first three apps are for my personal use and twitter is the only app I use professionally. I personally use Snapchat for my closest friends and family members.  I have realized I post EVERYTHING on snapchat. Currently, I am avoiding snapchat and I am trying not to post anything anymore. I feel I was getting addicted to posting literally everything I do during the

day.  I actually had Facebook but deleted about 2 years ago due to the fact that I realized I was putting too much personal information online. I, recently, deleted Instagram because I am trying to work
on my personal growth and my mental health. I realized seeing models and "the perfect life" on social media makes me feel insecure and unsure about what I am doing with my life.

The only two applications I use in my profession as a resident are: Twitter and YouTube. I created a twitter account about 3 years ago when I started working at Morton West High School. The school is really all about social media. I like sharing my fun activities I do in class. I also use it to promote my club. What I like about Twitter is the fact that I get to learn from other educators. I also like to see and learn what is going on at inside and outside of Morton. I started using YouTube 2 years ago when I realized my students were not understanding my notes. I started creating note videos for them and my failing rate decreased. I make videos for every lesson. You can check my page if you would like. (YouTube Account)

The Visitor Category

I have a lot of applications on my phone that are mainly used as visitors. I also feel that applications keep adding every time. The applications I use daily in my personal life are my fitness applications which includes: Nike Run, Lose it, Fitness track, and Calm. If you are looking for relaxation and mediation applications, calm is definitely one application you should have. I also use the music applications daily which includes: Pandora, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

Some of the applications I do not use daily but I have in my phone are my banking applications which include: chase, discover, capital one,  and Qapital. If you like saving money, I totally recommend Qapital! I also have my shopping applications which includes: Starbucks, Dunkin, Target, Southwest, and Amazon. I also use Netflix and Disney Plus but I really do not spend much time on them. I can probably start a movie today and finish it by the end of the week. I also have applications in my phone that I might need one day. For example, Uber, Lyft, Google Maps, IMaps, Find my Friends, YahooMail, The Weather Map.

The applications I use in my profession as visitor  are: outlook, Remind, and Google Voice. If you have not tried Google voice, you must try it now! It has changed my life completely as an educator. I personally do not like using the school's phone and many parents do not answer phone calls anymore. However, you will be surprised at the many responses you will get back when you text the parents. What I also love about this application is that I can use it directly in my phone or my laptop. Google Voice creates a new different phone number so you do not have to use your personal phone number. Which is one of the reasons why I love this. I label these applications as my visitor category because I only use them when I have to from Monday-Friday.

Overall, my perspective about social media also changed drastically after watching  "The Social Dilemma" which you can watch on Netflix. (Watch the official Trailer) It is a must! It blew my mind!

  1. I am super impressed by how self-aware you are about the technology you use. I applaud you for deleting Facebook to decrease your digital footprint and increase your own privacy. I have seen how people put any and all information on their profiles not realizing that it just allows someone else to steal their information or even identity. Also, I am very curious about how you use Twitter professionally. I don't have a Twitter; I only have Facebook because I try to limit how and where I put my information online. Since our class does require Twitter and now hearing that you use it for profession reasons, I am intrigued with this new social media experience I am to embark upon. Thank you for your insight to all this technology and the benefits they can have!

  2. Diana, holy-math-a-roni!! I can personally say I would have benefited greatly if my math teacher posted the notes, or gave us handouts from the notes. Just having the ability to watch the lesson as many times as it takes to understand it is great. Nice job recognizing the struggle and doing something about it. Also, kudos to you for recognizing the negative effects of social media, and taking action. Your experiences will definitely benefit you students. Keep it up!

Digital Tattoos      For this blog, I was really excited to know what Digital Tattoos was all about. I love tattoos and I have some of my own which leads me to think we would be talking about our tattoos. Little did I know that we would be talking about the tattoos we create for each other on the web. Amazing and shocking to know that 81% of two-year-olds have a digital footprint without their knowledge and consent. This shocked me because I never really thought about this deeply enough. I have been sharing pictures of my little cousin ever since she was born. She is now 10 and recently open up an Instagram account. The moment she posted her first picture, which was a picture with her family, I imminently gave her a lecture about social media. But what difference does it make?  I was already sharing pictures of her on the web way before she even open up an Instagram account.  With that being said, once I started doing my own research about myself, one of t...
Reflection      My proposal for the class was to flip the classroom. I had done some research on "Flipped Classroom" in another class before EDU 777 02. For this class, I started implementing slowly with my students. My style of teaching is, I Do, We Do, You Do. It has always worked fine. After learning about flipped classrooms, I started introducing note videos. My goal is to transform and implement my classroom for next semester. So far, I can say that the note videos have helped. I started including the videos for students to use to "catch up" or "review." At first, I had students complain, but later on, I had students say that they liked the videos better than having me teach directly. This was a positive aspect because I thought it was going to be hard for students to be responsible for their learning, especially on days that they were absent. The negative aspect of this is that I have noticed that it is hard for some students to follow along with the...

About Me

Hi! My name is Diana Madrigal       I am currently a Math teacher at Morton West High School located in Berwyn, Illinois. This is currently my 3rd year teaching. Teaching last year was a challenge, specially trying to create all the lessons and activities online. It was hard to keep the class in engage when they wouldn't want to turn on their cameras on. Most of the time I felt I was talking to myself. For this reason, I got really interesting in learning how to become better by using technology at my advantage. I wished I knew how to create and use different websites to make class more engaging. So I am definitely excited to learn from this class, which I am already learning. I have never used this website before! (excited) As a math teacher, I never really write much. Therefore, I do not know how the blogging works but I know I have couple of friends who use it and they make it look very interesting. I am hoping I can learn new thing to use in my classroom, s...
