Social Media
As a Millennium myself, I think I understand the new generation and their addiction to social media. When I hear the word addiction or someone being an addict I think about a drug addict or an alcoholic. However, this new generation is addicted to their phones, it is happening!
This week's topic is a very interesting topic and came in handy. About a month ago, students were destroying bathrooms because it was a "Tik Tok" trend. About a week ago, our school was been threatened by social media. There was a picture going around student's Snapchat that included a gun and it read "Do not come to school, you will all be getting it." The police were involved and as of right now it is to be a fake threat.
After all these accidents, teachers have been forced to talk about the usage of social media. As stated in the article, How to Prepare Students for Social Media Use, "We have wholeheartedly adopted social media without considering the consequences," said Sarah Domoff, associate professor at Central Michigan University, who specializes in kids and social media. Many of the students do not realize the consequences they can have for following a social media trend. Doing a Digital Tattoo project would be a great activity to do with the whole school. Students need to realize that social media is forever. This article is a great article to send to parents as well.
My picture source comes from an article I found apart from the list given to us. It explains the reason why we need to accommodate and understand our new generation. “We don’t want to ban cars because they are dangerous, nor would that be a good solution for social media,” Scott Morton emphasizes. “Instead we limit the danger of cars with tools like speed limits, traffic lights, drivers’ licenses, and seatbelts—and we have lots of competition and choice. In digital media we need to find a way to control the stuff that’s harming us, and our children in particular, while keeping the healthy part.” ( Susie Allen)
I know I have said it before, but with everything going on, I finally took some time to show my students the Social Dilemma documentary on Netflix. We are currently having a debate about it by using Parlay and the conversations are going AMAZING! Some students have challenged themselves to spend less time on social media. I feel like this should be shown to all students!
