Professional Learning Networks

As a professional, I have attended many Professional Developments. However, I never really consider the idea of Professional Learning Networks. I did not consider social media to be a professional tool to network. I have always seen social media as a way to network with my family and friends. More personal rather than professional. I created a Twitter account when I started working at Morton West High School. I think I have used my Twitter account more in the past month than I have ever used it in the past 3 years.

As I mention earlier, I was using Twitter to show the few amazing things that was going on in my classroom. I would only use Twitter to share within the school. I was nervous to do this assignment because I had no idea how Twitter worked. I would only post and forget about it. My mentality has definitely changed and I was able to learn from others. It was a relief to meet and see other teachers feeling the same way I been feeling about school lately. I started following new educators outside of my school district. Looking at their Twitters accounts I realized there are so many resources for teacher's mental health. I started following @MrMunesteach, @Misspaul20  and @NicholasFerroni because I found myself relating to their post. There was a lot of conversations within their post, which helped me learn from other educators perspectives. I decided to participate in the chats and retweeing their post.

What I personally liked about these 3 people was the way that they all supported the idea that teacher's mental health is as important as the student's mental health. I also noticed some of my co-workers were already following them. Through their pages I got to learn about other networks that help motivate and support teachers. Of course I had to follow!
I also participated in the class chats with @nmzumpano

As I kept exploring Twitter and started getting the hang of it. I found it easy to navigate. I started following educational twitter accounts that share so much information that I didn't even know existed. I love watching TEDtalks! Since I didn't know how to navigate Twitter before I didn't follow but I am now following @TEDTalks. Amazing stuff! I also found great content material for class in the following Twitter accounts:
  • @EdTech_HigherEd
  • @EdTechTalk
  • @ISBnews
  • @ISTE
  • @ERStrategies

The following Twitter accounts I started following for my personal use because of my shool are:
  • @morton201
  • @MortonCollege
  • @BarrCenter
I am a big believer in Mental Health and Twitter has deffinetly helped me how to approach my students with this subject in class. I Retweeted the following tweet on September 8th. I tried this Exit Slip on the last day of the month, September 30th. I was surprised at the responses students were giving. I found a resource and I implemented into the classroom!

  1. It's great to hear you found a resource on Twitter that worked for your students and that you found some people to follow that support educators.

Digital Tattoos      For this blog, I was really excited to know what Digital Tattoos was all about. I love tattoos and I have some of my own which leads me to think we would be talking about our tattoos. Little did I know that we would be talking about the tattoos we create for each other on the web. Amazing and shocking to know that 81% of two-year-olds have a digital footprint without their knowledge and consent. This shocked me because I never really thought about this deeply enough. I have been sharing pictures of my little cousin ever since she was born. She is now 10 and recently open up an Instagram account. The moment she posted her first picture, which was a picture with her family, I imminently gave her a lecture about social media. But what difference does it make?  I was already sharing pictures of her on the web way before she even open up an Instagram account.  With that being said, once I started doing my own research about myself, one of t...
Reflection      My proposal for the class was to flip the classroom. I had done some research on "Flipped Classroom" in another class before EDU 777 02. For this class, I started implementing slowly with my students. My style of teaching is, I Do, We Do, You Do. It has always worked fine. After learning about flipped classrooms, I started introducing note videos. My goal is to transform and implement my classroom for next semester. So far, I can say that the note videos have helped. I started including the videos for students to use to "catch up" or "review." At first, I had students complain, but later on, I had students say that they liked the videos better than having me teach directly. This was a positive aspect because I thought it was going to be hard for students to be responsible for their learning, especially on days that they were absent. The negative aspect of this is that I have noticed that it is hard for some students to follow along with the...

About Me

Hi! My name is Diana Madrigal       I am currently a Math teacher at Morton West High School located in Berwyn, Illinois. This is currently my 3rd year teaching. Teaching last year was a challenge, specially trying to create all the lessons and activities online. It was hard to keep the class in engage when they wouldn't want to turn on their cameras on. Most of the time I felt I was talking to myself. For this reason, I got really interesting in learning how to become better by using technology at my advantage. I wished I knew how to create and use different websites to make class more engaging. So I am definitely excited to learn from this class, which I am already learning. I have never used this website before! (excited) As a math teacher, I never really write much. Therefore, I do not know how the blogging works but I know I have couple of friends who use it and they make it look very interesting. I am hoping I can learn new thing to use in my classroom, s...
