My technology plan is to switch the old traditional teaching to a new, brighter, and engaging approach of flipping the classroom. I started thinking of doing this switch ever since I was introduced to this idea back in August in one of my technology classes. At the beginning of the year, it seemed like a good idea because students were coming back to remote learning and were familiar with watching videos and doing online work. However, once school started I realized students were academically behind. They also were not familiar with having expectations, rules and procedures. They thought that what they were doing during remote learning will still work for in-person learning, which was cheating their way through. This is when I realized I couldn't expect them to be independent learners yet.
We are now 4 weeks away from finals and I am trying to implement this new plan by next semester. What I have been doing this semester is having them be responsible of watching the videos before retaking a test. I have researched what works and does not work. For example, I was thinking of assigning the videos for homework, but based on my student's homework completion, they will not do the homework. Therefore, now, I am thinking of assigning short videos in class and doing an engaging activity at the end of class to make sure the students are watching and taking notes. At the same time, I can walk around monitoring and work one-on-one with students.
There is one thing I am scared and worried about. Students not doing their work independently and I start having a lot of failing students. I am scared that at the end of the year I will have to do double the work because I would have to teach students directly to help them pass. I am hoping the parents can understand and accept my new plan of teaching. I hope students will take this time wisely and prepare themselves to be responsible young adults.
